Metaluxe is the one zip type we ask you to check for before using your extender: please don't attach the adapter to a Metaluxe zipper — damage may occur. Every other zip type is fine — and further down, we'll show you exactly why.

First, the important surprise: Metaluxe is not metal

Despite the name and the look, Metaluxe zippers are plastic, made to look like metal. If your coat has a true metal zipper, this warning is not about your coat. Metaluxe was designed as a lighter alternative to metal — but that lightness comes at a cost: it's more fragile than metal and more fragile than standard plastic zips (like the common VISLON type). That fragility is the whole issue.

How to spot a Metaluxe zipper — three quick checks

1.  The finish. It shines like polished metal — silver, gold, or a darker gunmetal tone — but it's plastic. If you tap it or feel its weight, it won't feel like metal hardware.

2.  The tooth shape — this is the giveaway. Zip your coat up and look at the teeth from the outside. Metaluxe teeth are tall and narrow, with a slim body that flares to a rounded, pointed tip — like tiny glass bottles lying on their sides, stacked one against the next. They may be different colors too - silver, gold, black.

3.  The brands. Metaluxe zippers most often appear on coats from Rudsak and Mackage, and on certain models from O'Neil and Columbia. A brand on this list doesn't automatically mean your coat has one — check the teeth. A brand not on this list is very unlikely to.

Why only this one zip type?

The same shape that makes Metaluxe teeth look elegant — tall, narrow, minimal — also gives the adapter unusual leverage against them. Combined with the more fragile plastic, that means teeth can be dislodged if pressure builds between the adapter and the zip. No other zip type we've encountered has this combination, which is why Metaluxe is the only warning we have.

And why every other zip is safe - by design.

Here's the other side of the coin. The adapter is deliberately designed to release from the zip before pressure ever builds to damaging levels. That's not an accident — it's the core safety mechanism, and it exists because sudden pressure is the leading cause of ripped seams during pregnancy. Sitting down quickly can expand the hip area dramatically, putting real strain on clothing in an instant. When that happens with your extender on, the adapter simply lets go — no harm to your coat, no harm to the zip. Re-attach and carry on.
